The game consist of two teams of 18 players each, whereby the use of a ball, on an outdoor field with two tall goal post at each opposite ends sets the game settings. The entire purpose of the game is to successfully allow the ball to follow-through the two goal post of the opposition team. The team with the highest score will be crowned the winner after a total of fourth quarters, with each quarter lasting approximately 20 minutes long. However, due to delays such as an accident, or out of field balls, the game can be stopped and resumed accordingly.

Since the AFL is considered a ‘contact’ sport, players are able to use any part of their body to their advantage. Thus, this simply means using the body to tackle their opponents, or advance the game by kicking, running etc. However, players must not be caught holding the ball and running without bouncing or touching the ground for every 15mentres, or face the penalty. Also, players are allowed to use any methods to snatch the ball away from the opposing team anytime in the game except during a free-kick, which is issued by an umpire.

One distinct characteristics of AFL is termed ‘the mark’, whereby if any player is in catches a ball, by hand, that have traveled 15 meters without touching the ground, is awarded a free-kick.

The winner will then advance to the following round and face their next challenge.
